What a house league season buys

The all-girls Victory Green league charges the same as the DSMHL for 10U-18U ($1,449 standard, $1,949 enhanced) and publishes how many practices and games each package includes, so we can work out the cost per ice session:

PackagePricePracticesGamesPer ice session
Standard 10U-18U$1,4492218$36.23
Xtreme Enhancement 10U-18U$1,9494218$32.48

The Enhancement package costs $500 more but adds 20 practices, which lowers the cost per session from $36.23 to $32.48. Payment plans add $100 to each package.

Learn-to-play classes: single vs. semester

Hockey Academy classes are 45 minutes. At $40 a class that is $53.33 per hour of ice; at the semester rate of $25 it is $33.33. For example, 10 classes cost $400 one at a time or $250 at the semester rate, a saving of $150. Skate rental is free on class days, and the Academy offers a monthly unlimited public skating pass for $75. At $17 per visit, that pass pays for itself after 5 public sessions in a month.

Costs that aren't on this list

Equipment is the big one. We don't publish gear prices because they vary by size and shop, but the free Rookies programs lend everything; see our beginner equipment checklist for what you will need after that. Travel and Tier 1 clubs (see leagues and clubs) set their own season fees, plus travel and tournament costs. Dallas Stars Tournaments charge a team entry fee of $1,595 to $2,595 across the 6 events with posted fees (see the tournament calendar). Ask your club how team fees are shared among families.

A low-cost path for a brand-new player, using only the prices above: Little Rookies (free), a few Hockey Academy classes, then a DSMHL season. Compare options in the DFW youth hockey guide.
